Art in the Middle School
8th Grade Course Description
This one semester course explores a variety of art mediums with experience in the following art areas: art appreciation, construction, crafts, drawing, lettering, painting, printmaking, sculpture and related activities. Greater emphasis is placed on the elements and principles of design concepts as tools of visual communication. Art activities are planned to ensure that students understand art as a self-fulfilling and socialization process. Students are made aware of the aesthetic, cultural, and historical components of significant works of art. Skill development in art content (knowledge) and art processes are part of the eighth grade level competencies requirement of this course.

- A study of the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design.
- An exploration of drawing.
- An exploration of lettering.
- An exploration of painting.
- A study of realism, impressionism, abstractive, and non-objectivism.
- An introduction to relief printmaking.
- Thinking skill strategies in discussing art as well as the production of art.
- Employability skills in art.
- Critical thinking in art activities.
- An exploration of sculpture.
- Techniques of drawing, lettering, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.
- Multicultural aspects of art.
