Art in the Middle School
6th Grade Course Description
This one semester course explores a variety of art media with many experiences in the areas of art such as: art appreciation, constructing, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpting, crafts, careers and related activities. All art experiences are based on the elements of art (line, shape, color, form, texture, space and value) and how these elements are incorporated in works of art. This course is enriched and reinforced with thinking skills development and multicultural education art activities.

Course Topics to Be Presented:
  • An introduction to the Elements of Art: Line, Shape, Space, Form, Color, Value and Texture.  Students will develop a vocabulary for the visual arts and correctly label and illustrate the elements of art.
  • A study of the elements of shape, space and form and their relationship in the environment.
  • Examination of the non-objective, geometric art of Piet Mondrian and creation of a design effectively
  • utilizing negative space.
  • A study of line and form in the environment.
  • The creation of a contour drawings.
  • Analyzing the stylistic characteristics of the work of Jacob Lawrence and other famous artists.
  • Drawing an illustration of a community celebration.
  • Utilizing various shading techniques and applying the elements of line and texture.
  • Creating a pencil drawing of a wild animal.
  • Observe and discuss a variety of man-made and natural examples of radial balance.
  • An introduction to the art form of calligraphy and learn about Chinese calligraphy.
  • Learn about the artists, work and methods of the Ashcan School and design a drawing based on the study.
  • Perceive qualities of stenciling.
  • Use a variety of sources to research a culture, explore the decorative artworks and create an original artwork related to the culture.
