Art in the Middle School
7th Grade Course Description
This one semester course stresses a multicultural approach to the study of art. Students will explore a variety of art mediums with many experiences in the areas of art such as: art appreciation, constructing, crafts, drawing, lettering, painting, print-making, sculpting and related activities. All art experiences are based on the concepts of line, color, shape, form, texture, space, value, and how these concepts are incorporated in works of art. Skill development in art content (knowledge) and art processes are a part of the seventh grade level competencies and requirements of this course.
Course Topics to Be Presented:
- A study of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design; incorporating design motifs from Africa, the
- Middle East, and Asia.
- An introduction to drawing, design, lettering, printmaking, painting, and sculpture.
- A study of realism, impressionism, abstractive and non-objectivism.
- Thinking skill strategies in discussing art as well as the production of art.
- Techniques of drawing, designing, lettering, printmaking, painting and sculpting.
- A study of American artists, including, African-Americans, Handicapped Americans, and
- American women artists.
- An introduction to the art of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
