My name is Angela Brown Mathis and I am an Art Educator and Artist.  I teach Middle School Art at William Hall Academy.  Prior to joining the Creative Arts team at William Hall Academy I taught Drawing & Painting I & II, Digital Media I & II and Art Appreciation courses for grades 6-12 at Queen Anne School, a private college preparatory school in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

I've always been an artist, but I'm a latecomer to the teaching profession.  I spent three years studying fine art at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, before earning a Bachelors degree in Broadcast Journalism from Georgia State University. In my previous career, I worked in video production at television stations and cable networks in Atlanta, Cleveland and Washington, DC.

From television to teaching -- a mid-life career change.  After nearly 15 years in the creative side of television, I decided to go to graduate school to pursue my life long dream of being a fine artist and educator.  I earned a Masters Degree from the Corcoran College of Art & Design with a focus in Teaching Art in Schools, Museums and Community Organizations. I did my student teaching at Thomas Pullen School for the Visual and Performing Arts and I am a member of the National Association of Art Educators.  I am also a professional painter, printmaker and photographer who exhibits throughout the area and recently completed an artist-in-residency at Montpelier Arts Center.

I have a passion for art and I feel extremely blessed to be able to do what I love -- making art and teaching others how to make art.  I am especially proud to be teaching at William Hall Academy, which is not too far from where I grew up in Capitol Heights, Maryland.  Each day, I look forward to making a difference in the lives of my students by introducing them to art, exploring different art media, discovering the creativity that lies within each of them and encouraging them to follow their dreams.
